Maison Martin Margiela Vintage SS 1999 'A Doll's Wardrobe' Black Collared Jacket Top
For Spring/Summer 1999, Martin Margiela's 20th show, he staged a retrospective collection comprised of his first 10 years of design. One of the beloved concepts incorporated into this show was that of "A Doll's Wardrobe" - a highly acclaimed, extremely sought after, and ingenious idea of taking vintage doll clothing, reproducing these pieces, and blowing up their details and proportions in scale. Here we have a beautiful medium-weight ramie in charcoal black. A top, open back top, or a reverse jacket? You decide! It's adorable and edgy rolled into one. A boxy, semi-cropped fit with slightly wide sleeves and the cutest pointed collar. Long threads dangle at the end of the seams, from the sleeve and at the front. The backside, layered over at the top with one single closure, the favorite and defining moment of the doll pieces- an oversized silver snap. Margiela's signature white stitches are seen both attaching these snap pieces, as well as the label. The 'reproduction' label is a piece of art in and of itself - in fact, Margiela even put these on the outside, front and center, on some of the pieces that walked the runway.
