A statement and a staple. Bold colors, prints or shapes, dramatic volume, chain mail, sequins, or unexpected cutouts. Every wardrobe needs at least one Statement Top.

The 1980s are my go-to decade for statement tops, particularly for voluminous silhouettes, or eye-catching materials such as leather or PVC. Find modern styles with cut-outs from the 90s- early 2000s, or look for 1960s or 70s sequined, paillette or chain mail tops perfect for late Summer parties. 

Brands to look for: Chanel, Comme des Garçons, Issey Miyake, Jean Paul Gaultier, Krizia, Paco Rabanne, Maison Martin Margiela, Vivienne Westwood, Yves Saint Laurent.

Key decades: 1960s-2000s

Fabrics: Silk, mesh, leather, metal. 

Colors: Black or white when focusing on shape or volume, metallics or bold colors and prints. 

Style notes: You don’t need a lot of statement tops so invest in something unique and let it be the focus.
