7_ The Turtleneck

Simple and essential. A turtleneck whether slim-fitting, slouchy, or sleeveless is an endlessly useful wardrobe piece. Layer them under shirts, blazers, and dresses, or wear them solo for a sleek and refined look.

Simple and essential. A turtleneck whether slim fitting, slouchy or sleeveless is an endlessly useful wardrobe piece. Layer them under shirts, blazers and dresses or wear them solo for a sleek and refined look.

The 1990s is my go-to decade for minimalist items like a turtleneck. But also look to the 1970s for sporty styles and the 1980s for baggy cotton turtlenecks.

Brands to look for: Calvin Klein, DKNY, Ralph Lauren, Jil Sander, Issey Miyake Pleats Please, Margiela, Prada, LL Bean, Loro Piana, Pendleton.

Key decades: 1970s-1990s.

Fabrics: Cotton, wool, cashmere, viscose or silk. Jersey and rib knits.

Colors: White, cream, black, tan, navy, camel, browns, rust, grey.

Style notes: Stay away from synthetics, as they may cause you to feel overheated.
