ALL TOO FAMILIAR
While sifting between school uniforms and Goodwill sweaters, old costumes and familial heirlooms, creatives Clay Stephen Gardner and Mary Sucaet found overflows of inspiration amongst the all-too familiar. After taking a visit to Mary’s childhood home, they both constructed timelessly innovative ensembles out of the otherwise-seeming mundane or dull. From pairing vintage handkerchiefs with uniform skirts, and embroidered leather alongside lace stockings, their orchestrated collection shows how the residents of a childhood home’s basement can instill a lifelong affinity for well-made, and well-loved, clothing.

In the spring of 2024, Display Copy hosted its first-ever community clothing drive in collaboration with photographer Deirdre Lewis and stylist Herin Choi. United by a common thread of creativity and sustainability, donations from all five boroughs were gathered and entrusted to five talented sustainable designers across the East Coast. Determined to honor and adapt them, Cameron resized and modernized the garments, showing us that nothing is completely new or old and that fashion can be circular in both practice and spirit.
