“I love using found materials in my work, specifically hardware and textiles found on the street. I’m drawn to the specific effects that the street imposes on found materials. The textiles become perfectly distressed and faded and metals can find themselves without function, therefore ready for a new purpose. It’s interesting to think about where these textiles and metals existed previously and how I can give them a new life that might be the complete opposite of their original intended purpose.”

“I’m not a jeweler. I don’t know how to make jewelery. It’s more wearable art than jewelery. The point of it is to question how we value things. This idea that jewelery can only be made from precious metals or rare gemstones is false. Why not just pick anything up, wear it, and make it your “jewel”? I think for a lot of people, there’s value in the things they find at the bottom of their drawer, things that have been sitting there for ages and they can’t get rid of. So, I ask, why isn’t that your earring?”

"I first fell in love with upcycling at Parsons when I created a boro textile from discarded socks and clothing fragments — materials deemed unusable. This intimate, entirely handmade textile reshaped how I thought about design, reinforcing the idea that a garment’s essence often lies in its materiality. For my senior thesis, 'From Ashes to Dust', I worked almost exclusively with vintage, deadstock and repurposed fabric — from the 1950s U.S. Army blankets to 1960s fur coats and deadstock Parisian moiré. My approach was grounded in hauntology — a term coined by French philosopher Jaques Derrida that encompasses the persistence of the past embedded in the present and future; the idea that materials carry histories within them. Upcycling allows fashion to move beyond pure artifice, embracing storytelling and the tracing past lives embedded in fabric."

“I come from one of India's oldest tailoring and dye-making families; both of my grandfathers were tailors and I saw how resourceful they were — crafting suiting and shirting from whatever materials they could access and saving any yardage they had left. I feel like the age-old challenge is how to make upcycled garments look polished and special. Some brands have succeeded, but overall, shifting the perception of upcycling could help it play a larger role in the mainstream fashion industry. I see the future of upcycling as a necessity — with global challenges like climate change, we don’t have a choice. The question is how this can be done at scale and how we facilitate access to materials.”

My brand takes up the codes and aesthetics of Afro-European clothing, drawing from the cultural heritage of the family I grew up with. “I want to elevate the message that sustainability can be cool and you can be sustainable without sacrificing style. There’s always more to be explored in that space. It’s definitely not the easiest route to go, because if it was, every brand would be doing it and we wouldn’t have a problem. But design with purpose is freeing and rewarding. There are always going to be new ways to innovate. Designing a piece that doesn’t look “upcycled” proves the point that we don't need to use and produce new fabrics. In the spring of 2024, Display Copy hosted its first-ever community clothing drive in collaboration with photographer Deirdre Lewis and stylist Herin Choi. Fashion Editor Michelle Cameron reflects on her maternal grandmother’s Cheongsams, delicate silk dresses that symbolize both personal memory and cultural heritage. Inheriting the garments after her grandmother’s passing, these garments represent more than mere clothing; they are artifacts of a life lived. Determined to honor and adapt them, Cameron resized and modernized the garments, showing us that nothing is completely new or old and that fashion can be circular in both practice and spirit.
