TRASH TALK

Katy Mason takes a step beyond her acclaimed upcycled jewelry, weaving both accidental and deliberately maimed objects into an intricate web of newfangled womenswear.  Her designs bring forth new meaning to the word broken - creating desire in the disposed.

TRASH TALK

Traditionally Katy Mason, an artist in residence at the Sarabande Foundation, upcycles trash and other found objects into jewelry. But for this Display Copy exclusive, the designer and stylist Clementine Saglio have collaborated on Mason’s first foray into womenswear. Where trash meets jewelry, meets clothing, meets sculpture.

Strung on “invisible” webs of fishing wire and draped across the body, the garments naturally tangle and morph into a different form of their original state. Taking on a new lease of life, an irony given their original disposal.

Katy is currently selling her range of accessory clips at the Independent Designer’s store, 50m London. An extension of her “Fragile Rage” collection where defective or disused objects are purposefully smashed and broken further - a way of releasing cathartic “rage”. The broken pieces are then delicately worked into, cared for and curated with other leftover pieces of mechanics, electronics, beach findings and broken jewelry to produce something with a “fragile” aesthetic.

In the spring of 2024, Display Copy hosted its first-ever community clothing drive in collaboration with photographer Deirdre Lewis and stylist Herin Choi. United by a common thread of creativity and sustainability, donations from all five boroughs were gathered and entrusted to five talented sustainable designers across the East Coast. Each designer wove their vision into the fabric of these pre-loved pieces, transforming them into pieces that embody reinvention, craftsmanship, and the boundless potential of coming together for a common purpose.

  2. USE THE TOOL AS A TOOL AGAINST ITSELF

Designer Saskia Leanarts explores the inherent function (or dysfunctionality) of a tool, in order to achieve results very much contrary to its intended purpose. A concept rooted in ingenuity and the ability to think outside traditional boundaries (and baggage), Leanarts latest collection employs decommissioned military garb to subvert and surpass typical associations.
  3. Street Smarts

Channeling the raw energy and authenticity of the city, artist Scooter LaForge not only captures the essence of street culture but also transforms discarded materials found in the urban sprawl into clever masterpieces, painting a picture where grit meets glamor in the heart of the concrete jungle.
  4. BRIC-A-BRICOLAGE

Zak Parmley’s work is a bricolage of anything that’s within reach — fabric scraps, plastic, “shoddy” — refuse masterfully combined into a rich tapestry that’s anything but shoddy.
