The Button Down

The Button Down

A forever classic. Slim and simple, tuxedo details, oversized collars, short sleeves in the summer, double breasted buttons or that quintessential boyfriend fit, you can never have too many white shirts.

No decade does white shirts better than the 1990s, but I also search for men's shirts from the early 1900s-1940s, and look to the 1980s for oversized details like big collars and puffy sleeves to add drama to a classic.

Brands to look for: Calvin Klein, DKNY, Ralph Lauren, Anne Fontaine, Prada, Jil Sander, Ann Demeulemeester, Yohji Yamamoto, Giorgio Armani, Christian Dior, Gianfranco Ferre.

Key decades: Antique-1920s tuxedo shirts, 1940s menswear, 1980s, 1990s.

Fabrics: Classic cotton. But also linen, rayon or silk.

Colors: White, cream and off-white

Style notes: Fit is key, get out your measuring tape!
